Who is a Gastroenterologist?

A gastroenterologist is a medical specialist who focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of disorders related to the digestive system. This includes the esophagus, stomach, small intestine, colon, liver, gallbladder, and pancreas.

When to see a Gastroenterologist?

You should see a gastroenterologist if you experience symptoms or have conditions related to the digestive system. Common reasons include abdominal pain, bloating, difficulty swallowing, persistent diarrhea or constipation, and abnormal liver function tests.

Referral and Self-Referral:

In some cases, a primary care physician or another specialist may refer you to a gastroenterologist. However, depending on your healthcare system and insurance, you might also be able to schedule a consultation directly with one of our gastroenterologists without a referral.

In-Person Consultation and Teleconsultation:

We offer both in-person consultation and teleconsultation services. In general, our gastroenterologist need to see you in-person for first visit consultations for a proper physical examination and to obtain consent and arrange for procedures. Teleconsultations may be considered for follow up consultations with patients to discuss symptoms, results and receive guidance remotely

Preparation for Consultation:

Before the consultation, please prepare all relevant medical history, including previous diagnoses, medications, and any recent test results. Be prepared to discuss your symptoms, their duration, and any factors that worsen or alleviate them.

Diagnostic Tests:

Your gastroenterologist may order various diagnostic tests to assess digestive health. These may include blood tests, imaging studies (such as ultrasound, CT scans or MRIs), and functional tests like high resolution manometry and 24hr ph monitoring, colon transit studies, Fibroscan liver stiffness measurement, hydrogen breath testing and endoscopy (gastroscopy, colonoscopy, endoscopic ultrasound)

Treatment Plans:

Based on the diagnosis, your gastroenterologist will develop a personalized treatment plan. This may involve medication, lifestyle changes, dietary recommendations, or, in some cases, surgical intervention.

Follow-Up and Monitoring:

After the initial consultation and treatment, follow-up appointments may be scheduled to monitor your progress. Regular check-ups are crucial for managing chronic conditions and ensuring the effectiveness of the prescribed interventions.

Collaborative Care:

Gastroenterologists often work in collaboration with other healthcare professionals, such as nutritionists, surgeons, and radiologists, to provide comprehensive care for digestive disorders.

Insurance Coverage:

Check with your insurance provider to understand coverage for gastroenterology consultations, tests, and procedures. Some services may require pre-authorization, and copayments or deductibles may apply.

Emergency Situations:

In emergencies, such as severe abdominal pain, gastrointestinal bleeding, or other acute symptoms, seek immediate medical attention through the 24hr Urgent Care Centres.
