The 4 Common Causes That Results In Abdominal Pain
24 Jun 2022

Abdominal pain and aches are common issues that affect many at one time or another. While general stomach pain is not any cause for worry, it can be a sign of something serious that requires immediate medical care if the pain becomes progressive.
Types of Stomach Pain
Your doctor will usually ask you to describe your abdominal pain according to how you feel. There are three ways you can describe the pain you are experiencing to help your doctor assess the situation better, depending on how long the pain lasts and how quickly it develops:
- Acute pain develops for a couple of hours up to a few days with other symptoms.
- Chronic pain lasts longer, from a couple of weeks up to a few months or even longer and might come and go.
- Progressive pain continues to worsen over time, with other symptoms developing.
Common Causes of Abdominal Pain
Stomach pain may be caused by many scenarios. The abdomen holds many vital organs such as the small and large intestines, pancreas, spleen, liver, and stomach. Whenever a medical issue happens in any of these organs, a common symptom felt almost immediately is abdominal pain.
Nevertheless, these are four common causes that might result in the development of stomach pain.
Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD)
IBD describes two medical conditions: Ulcerative Colitis and Crohn’s Disease, both of which are described as the chronic inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract. Some of the common symptoms individuals might experience besides abdominal discomfort are diarrhoea, fever, loss of appetite, fatigue, joint pain, and bloody stools.
Bowel Obstruction
Commonly known as intestinal obstruction, this is a serious medical condition that occurs as a result of an obstruction in the small or large intestine. Usually, when that happens, the individual cannot have a good healthy bowel movement, resulting in a swollen belly and stomach pain. Some other common symptoms that one might experience are bloating, diarrhoea, severe pain, vomiting, constipation, decreased appetite, and cramping.
Gastritis
Gastritis is an umbrella term for several conditions that have one thing in common: Inflammation of the stomach’s lining. Gastritis often happens as a result of the build-up of bacteria that causes stomach ulcers or the regular use of specific pain killers. Regular alcohol consumption is also found to be a key contributor to gastritis. Some common symptoms that the individual might experience are loss of appetite, vomiting, nausea, and feeling too full immediately.
Gastroparesis
Gastroparesis is a chronic condition in which the stomach is not capable of emptying normally, resulting in food passing through less quickly than how it supposed to be. A normal stomach uses strong muscular contraction to push your food through the digestive system. If the individual suffers from gastroparesis, then such contraction might not happen, resulting in the food not being pushed through the digestive tract. The cause of this condition is still unknown. With this condition, some symptoms that one might experience are excessive burping, feeling full too quickly, nausea, vomiting, bloatedness, and heartburn.
Conclusion
While these are some of the common causes of abdominal pain, it is always recommended to make a visit to either a gastroenterologist or your family doctor if you suspect yourself of having one of these conditions or if you experience any type of stomach pain, be it acute, chronic, or progressive.
